I’m a financial advisor by day and a foodie by night. Even the most numbers-focused folks like me need a delicious escape. So, as one of Louisiana’s most valued financial advisors, I decided to take a break from providing top-notch financial services to share some of Louisiana’s hidden culinary gems.
From mouthwatering Louisiana Mexican fare to fine dining to a delicious fusion of classic and innovative Italian cuisine, Louisiana’s food scene has something for everyone. So grab your appetite and join me on a tasty tour as I serve up my top 3 favorite restaurants in the Baton Rouge community.
1. Mestizo Louisiana Mexican Cuisine
If you’re craving a taste of Mexico combined with a Louisiana twist, head over to Mestizo Louisiana Mexican Cuisine. This place just celebrated 25 years in Baton Rouge with an outstanding review.
Owner Jim Urdiales offers a unique take on Mexican food. His own Acadian French-Mexican heritage inspires many of the dishes you’ll find on the menu. The drinks are like no other in Baton Rouge, ranging from go-to cocktails and beverages to healthy options to ones with a unique twist.
This isn’t your average Tex-Mex restaurant. Instead, you’ll find creative recipes that highlight the diverse culinary customs of Louisiana and Mexico using fresh products.
Tacos with crawfish infusion and duck empanadas are just two of the delectable treats available on the Mestizo menu. My personal favorites? The Dos, the Steak Power Bowl, or—if I’m really hungry—the Veracruz.
2. Stab’s Prime Steak & Seafood
If you’re in the mood for a fine-dining experience, Stab’s Prime Steak & Seafood is a must-visit.
Warm and refined, this Baton Rouge landmark offers a wonderful menu that includes USDA Prime steak cuts and the finest seafood available in Louisiana.
Stab’s opened in 1981 and was founded by Wayne Stabiler. Diners are consistently drawn to the restaurant’s commitment to quality and steadfast Southern hospitality. Whether you’re feasting on a meal of delicious jumbo lump crab meat or a freshly cooked filet mignon, Stab’s always offers an amazing restaurant experience.
For those of you who imbibe, the cocktail and wine selection are top-notch. My wife and business partner Claire Elliott likes the Rosemary Pear while I usually have an old fashioned cocktail.
My tried-and-true menu favorites are the 16 oz. prime ribeye steak (don’t forget the toppings!) or the sea bass.
3. DiGiulio Brothers Italian Cafe
To top off this restaurant tour, I must mention DiGiulio Brothers Italian Cafe.
Tucked away in Baton Rouge, it has provided a taste of family legacy since 1987. Run by the DiGiulio brothers themselves, this quaint restaurant offers a delicious blend of traditional and inventive Italian fare. The story behind this family-run restaurant absolutely adds to its charm.
Beyond “cafe” cuisine, their menu features familiar favorites like five-cheese lasagna with a meatball and veal marsala, as well as fresh daily fish specials. DiGiulio Brothers offers a wide selection of wines and bottled beers in addition to their famous hand-tossed pizzas.
DiGiulio Brothers is one of my favorite local restaurants because of its charming ambiance and mouth-watering cuisine. I go there for informal lunches with friends and romantic evenings out with my wife. Two of my favorite dishes are the veal parmigiana and veal piccata.
